Instructions for use

Lawn Preparation and Maintenance

Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat can be mixed 50:50 into the top layer of soil, then raked to a fine tilth before seeding or laying turf. In Autumn, Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat can be used as a lawn dressing by spreading a layer of it on the existing lawn and lightly rake in. Damage can be caused to a lawn through sports activity, vehicle damage, pets or disease. Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat can be used in repairing the damaged area. Remove the damaged area and refill with Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat, level off and rake to a fine tilth before seeding or laying turf.

Seed Beds

Remove the top layer of vegetation to reveal fresh soil. Rake the soil to create an even surface removing large stones, etc. Spread a good layer (2-5cm) of Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss peat into the top layer of the soil. Rake to mix the soil and the moss peat together. Plant seeds following manufacturer’s instructions and water well to encourage germination.

Making your own specialist growing media mix

Lime, fertiliser, bark, perlite, grit, wetting agent, water retaining granules and other additives can be added to Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat to create your own specialist compost mix for filling pots and containers. For best results follow manufacturer’s application rates for each ingredient.

Ericaceous plants

Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat contains no additives and has a naturally low pH, therefore is suitable for ericaceous plants such as Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias. It does not contain fertiliser, therefore, if you need a product with fertiliser already added, then you should use Bord na Móna Growise Ericaceous Compost. Otherwise, you can use an ericaceous plant food.

All other plants (non-ericaceous plants)

Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat contains no fertiliser or lime. Lime and fertiliser must be added following manufacturer’s instructions, to suit plants’ needs. If you need a product with fertiliser already added, then you should use Bord na Móna Growise Multipurpose Compost.

Planting out roses, trees and shrubs

For planting out flowers, trees and shrubs, dig a hole that is a few inches wider than the root ball. Add a thick layer of Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat all-round the hole, adding lime and fertiliser if required. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the plant is at the same level as it was in the pot i.e. don’t bury the stem. Fill the hole with a 50:50 mixture of Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat and soil. Firm the mixture around the plant and then water it well.

Maintenance of beds and borders

A 2 cm layer of Bord na Móna Growise Premium Moss Peat forked or raked into the top 5-10cm of the soil will help maintain soil health.

Ericaceous beds

Dig out soil to the desired depth. Create a barrier by using plastic, pond liner or other suitable liner. Fill with Bord na Móna Growise Premium Irish Moss Peat. Plant with your favourite ericaceous plants. Top up with Bord na Móna Growise Medium Chip Bark, Bord na Móna Growise Enriched Top Soil, soil or decorative stone. Feed and water as appropriate.
