Mechanical stability is the ability of peat to resist breakdown during mechanical handling. Handling in containers and ships can create fine particles and a consequent reduction in air space of the final potting medium.
Bord na Móna peat is among the most resistant to handling and mechanical breakdown during transport. This is due to relatively high levels of lignin in the older, more decomposed, Irish peat. Younger peats have lower lignin levels and are more vulnerable to breakdown during handling.
